Questions about our review process

How do you choose which cafes to review?

We start with reader suggestions and neighborhood threads, then shortlist spots that get consistent local buzz. We also track newly opened roasters and long-standing filter coffee counters that regulars keep defending. Each city gets a fresh list every quarter, so the coverage stays current rather than repeating the same five famous outlets.

Do cafes know you are visiting for a review?

No. We visit anonymously and pay for every order ourselves. The staff never knows a review is in progress, which keeps the service speed, portion sizes, and espresso shots exactly as a normal customer would receive them. We only identify ourselves after the visit if we need to clarify a menu detail or opening hour.

What exactly do you score in each review?

We grade espresso extraction, filter coffee preparation, food pairings, seating comfort, service speed, and value for money. Each category gets its own score, then we combine them into an overall rating. We also note practical details like power outlet availability, noise levels, and the best hours to visit for quiet work or group meetups.

How do you handle negative reviews?

We publish them the same way we publish positive ones. If a cafe serves a bitter shot or keeps customers waiting twenty minutes, we say so plainly and explain what went wrong. We also revisit spots after six months if the owner addresses the issues, so the scorecard can reflect genuine improvement rather than a one-time bad day.

Can cafe owners respond to a review?

Yes. We allow a short response section under each scorecard where the owner can clarify menu changes, staffing shifts, or renovation plans. That response appears directly below our verdict, so readers see both sides before deciding whether to visit. We do not edit owner replies, but we do remove anything that attacks individual staff members.

How often do you update the ratings?

We refresh each scorecard every eight to ten months, or sooner if the cafe changes ownership, moves locations, or revamps its menu. A rating is only useful when it reflects the current state of the kitchen and the bar, so we treat every published score as a living document rather than a permanent verdict.

How We Rate and What Our Scores Mean

Before you browse our cafe reviews, here are the ground rules behind every scorecard, visit, and recommendation on Lilot Cafes.

Do you visit cafes anonymously?

Yes. Every review on this platform comes from an unannounced visit. We pay for our own drinks and food, never identify ourselves to the staff, and only reveal our purpose after the bill is settled. This keeps the experience identical to what any regular customer would get.

What criteria go into a scorecard?

Each location is judged on six fixed points: espresso quality, filter coffee preparation, food pairings, seating comfort, service speed, and value for money. Every criterion is scored separately, then combined into a single overall rating. We do not average the numbers blindly; the final score weighs espresso and filter coffee more heavily because that is the core of a coffee spot.

How do you decide the best visiting hours?

We visit each cafe at least twice, once on a weekday morning and once on a weekend afternoon. The recommended hours in our reviews reflect the quieter windows we observed, when seating is available and service is noticeably faster. If a cafe gets crowded at 5 p.m. every day, we say so plainly.

Are the photos in your reviews verified?

Every photo attached to a review is taken by our own team during the visit. We do not accept promotional images from cafe owners, and we never use stock photography. The timestamp and location data are kept on file, so what you see is exactly what the cafe looked like on the day we were there.

Do you accept paid placements or sponsored ratings?

No. Cafes cannot pay to appear higher in our rankings, and we do not sell score adjustments. A location that wants to be listed simply needs to meet our basic criteria of serving coffee and having a physical seating area. Sponsorship only covers banner space on the site, never the editorial content.

What does a recommendation tag actually mean?

Each review ends with one of three tags: solo workers, student groups, or casual meetups. The tag is based on practical observations like table size, noise level, power outlet availability, and how long customers typically stay. It is not a general quality statement; a cafe can be excellent for solo work but too cramped for a group of six.
